Ovi Store - first 5 months
2009 has sure gone by quickly and being mid-November, 2010 is rapidly approaching. For those of you who are mobile developers or are following the various mobile application stores available in market I thought I would give another update regarding Ovi Store and where we are since we launched about 5 months ago. The following stats are from 26 May through 31 October:
  • Available on over 100 different Nokia devices (60+ Symbian S60 devices)
  • Active users from over 180 countries
  • Developers from 65 countries are distributing content
  • 8 countries today have local content, local language support and mobile billing: UK, Spain, France, Germany, Singapore, Australia, Italy, Russia. By the end of Q1 2010 there will be more than 20 countries.
  • Top 10 Ovi Store Markets by performance in alphabetic order: Egypt, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Russia & UK
  • In almost all of the top 10 Ovi Store countries, 5800 XpressMusic and N97 are the #1 and  #2 devices for Ovi Store activity and consumer engagement
  • Redownload now available and search is much improved, more details (http://tinyurl.com/yf9tmbd)
  • Ovi Store will ship embedded on most new compatible Nokia devices including Symbian S60 and Series 40 from Q4 2009
  • On average, each registered user has downloaded at least 8 items from Ovi Store
  • In October, the number of content items downloaded was over 70% higher than in Sept.
If you have a Nokia device and you want to download or enhance your device, visit store.ovi.com to browse for content and applications. Or even if you don’t have a Nokia device you can visit Ovi Store and browse through all of the great applications and content that Nokia users in over 180 countries are downloading and purchasing on a daily basis.

Any questions please leave them here and I'll reply.

Labels:

- In 5 months, Ovi Store couldn't build a fast native client instead of current WRT based slow one.
- In 5 months, Ovi Store couldn't attract useful developers, currently there are only commercially established profit-oriented (but not quality oriented) developers existing.
- In 5 months, Ovi Store couldn't include much high quality applications except Nokia's. Also many most used applications @ target devices aren't included yet. (The list is long, google would help a lot)
- In 5 months, Ovi Store couldn't mind providing useful information (like file type, application type (JavaME / Symbian C++ / Python / WRT etc), download + installation sizes, version, total downloads) about the content provided
- In 5 months, Ovi Store couldn't establish useful review system. 3 stars are not enough and user comments are not treated as a feedback for the content (if they were, lots of malicious content would be removed)

Sorry but as a long time Nokia fan, I'm very disappointed by these problems; so I couldn't stop myself from expressing.

I've published one app to OVI and I'm already generating some revenue. Ovi is getting better and better.

Great progress indeed!

1) Can you give any idea on how many developers are there that have put content forward? There are rampant individual/threads on various phone fora claiming that Symbian has hardly any developer support. I would like to get a sense of how true/untrue that is as seen from your prespective.

2) Can you give any hints on improvements/added functionality on the way?

ps. On my N82 the search function still requires me to move the cursor down to the search box before I can type the search string in. Small things like this do matter.

3) Can you give any idea of the breakdown between apps/ringtones/themes/screensavers? I did see one report on what the breakdown in in the Russia store.

using innerActive to monetize apps & games on Ovi and generating some nice revs...

It seems to me that OVI has a very difficult balancing act, trying to provide developers with a decent return on investment balanced with the needs of consumers to get compelling applications at a low cost.

I would say that so far OVI is doing ok, the most important issue to make OVI a success is volume of downloads. This is the only way developers are going to get enough returns on the considerable investment needed to develop mobile apps and provide consumers with a rich selection of low cost downloads.

OVI seem to be doing all the right things to improve volumes, advertising OVI in the media, pre-installing the OVI app, and helping developers get to market. They just need to do more of the same.

I have seen several statements from OVI on the rate of growth of sales which sound good, it would be really interesting if OVI could release some more details on total number of downloads, downloads per device, downloads per country etc .

Does anyone know of an option for ad-funded applications in OVI?
We use admob for iphone, and also android - but they don't have an SDK for symbian/java.

Thanks.

Hi GeceBekcisi. Here are answers to your questions:

1) We're constantly working on the performance and are making progress.

2) Ovi Store is open to any developer and the rating system is the community's way of responding to the quality of the application. This allows for real-world feedback from consumers.

3) There are quite a number of well known applications available in Ovi Store from brands such as facebook, CNBC, Reuters, AccuWeather, Netflix, Associated Press, EA, others. If you're interested in a particular app you can use the search field on the store.ovi.com site. When you say target devices, what devices are you referring to? Here's a list of the supported devices: http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/matrix_oviStore_1.html

4) We appreciate this feedback on what to offer in the information about the application. We can consider this and other feedback in our roadmap for the Store and encourage developers and consumers to let us know what they would like to see with the Ovi Store experience.

5) We are learning as the Ovi Store continues about how users are using the rating system. While we do not want to monitor what is said and prefer that the community censor itself, we are mindful of malicious and unsubstantiated comments.

No reason to be sorry, we respect your opinion and feedback and it's important to hear from you and others what you think. Please know that we hear you and are doing our best to make the Ovi Store a positive experience for customers and developers around the world.

when you say, ranked by 'perfoprmance', do you mean downloads or revenues?

Hi Bill, thanks a lot for your information. Please, can you confirm the information that has been published in this site? The most importat part is where they said that "Ovi Store also grew, from 46 million to 61 million" (http://news.softpedia.com/news/New-Nokia-Ovi-Store-Stats-Unveiled-127463.shtml)

Thanks in advance, and I will also really preciate if you can send me more Stats information about Ovi Store, I'm writing a Special Report for Developers and I need accurate and double checked information.

I will gladly send you the report before publishing it for your comments.

Thanks

Hi Bill,

I am a public school teacher in Springfield, MA and I have a question that I'm hoping you can help me out with. It looks like you are working with Nokia and not Adobe now, but I can't seem to find a straight understandable answer. I saw you on Adobe's mobile pages so I figured give it a try.

I have a class set of Dell Axim x51s that I use throughout the day with my 5th grade students. I got the PDAs in a grant aimed at integrating technology skills into the classroom to address the limited access to technology amongst low income students (90% of students at our school falls below the poverty line).

The PDAs run Windows Mobile 5.0 and have IE Mobile and Opera 9.5. I've also installed Flashlite, Flash 7, and at one time Flash Player ActiveX.

My question for you is that there are so many amazing new free educational website popping up, but they all or nearly all require flash player it seems. For example the games at spellingcity.com http://www.spellingcity.com/hangmouse-kids-hangman-online.html?listId=121738 or the following book quizzing site http://www.renlearn.com/ar/SampleQuizzes/ARSample.html?Content/247W.xml.

Should my students be able to use these sites on their PDAs or is it just something that the devices and software just won't allow for?

Any and all help with this is greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much, Roni Gold
